10 Tips to Keep Your Inner Sports Monster on a Leash

Every year there are news headlines about parents behaving badly at their children’s sporting events 메이저놀이터. Today with children’s sports becoming so competitive it has the amazing capacity to bring out the worst in some parents. It seems that inside the mildest of parents there lurks a ‘sports monster’ that only emerges when their children hit the field.

This sports monster will show itself when parents argue with officials, umpires, disagrees with coaches and ultimately drives their children to distraction with well meaning advice.

Here are 10 Tips to help parents keep their inner sports monster on a leash:-

1. Don’t allow sport to dominate your family or your child’s life. Create balance between different areas and also encourage your child to vary their interests.

2. Be a neutral observer at your child’s games and events. Take an interest and be encouraging, but don’t add pressure with the end result or in your child’s performance.

3. Focus on your child’s efforts, improvements, enjoyment and participation in the game, rather than on the end results.

4. Give your child positive feedback about their performance. Parental approval is very important to children and is linked to their continued participation in their chosen sport.

5. Remember that sport teaches your child valuable life lessons, such as how to work together as a team, solve problems and accept disappointment when defeated. Sport builds character no matter how old you are.

6. Allow your child the opportunity to talk about their sports, but don’t force them to talk to you if they don’t want to.

7. Build a relationship with your child’s coach and allow him/her the opportunity to teach your child the skills they need to be successful at their chosen sport.

8. Take an interest in other players, not just your child. By removing the focus from your child you will more likely keep a good perspective of the sport.

9. Be the model of good sportsmanship for your child and insist that he or she acts in a sportsmanlike manner at all times, both on and off the field.

10. Let your child know that they are in their chosen sport to have fun rather than to win. Emphasise fun rather than winning and teamwork rather than individual performance.

It can be a challenge for any parent to keep their inner sports monster on a leash, particularly when their child is about to score a goal or make a winning play. As a parent it is important to keep your perspective and remember that your child is participating in a sport to benefit themselves and not the parent.
